A stoma is man-made surgical opening that is cut into the side of the abdomen to waste from the body to be expelled into a collection bag most often called a colostomy bag. A person may have had to have part of their colon removed and the stoma is made from the colon - hence forming a "col" ostomy ( colostomy). Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are very complex in what they do. Many receive millions of gallons of wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, restaurants, launder-mats, and others every day.

Spoiled and disposed wastewater really stinks! It stinks even more when the accumulated waste begins to decompose at a local community WWTP. This bacterial decomposition or breakdown of waste gives off foul odors. Foul odors are caused when bacteria ingest sulfur, rather than their preferred oxygen, producing a sulfur driven byproduct of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) that is strong enough to permeate an entire community. In some cases these H2S odor levels can reach concentrations strong enough to cause injury or death.

Sulfur based hydrogen sulfide—the cause of odors—can occur in many common areas such as funky food odors from garlic or onion in kitchens, smoke in draperies or carpets, pet odors, and even skunk scents.
