What is a Hammer Toe?
Foot-pain from hammer toe. This deformity of the second, third or fourth toes is characterized by the toe being bent at the middle (proximal inter-phalangeal) joint
in a form resembling a hammer.
The toe base points upward and the end of the toe angels downward. Initially, hammer toes are noticed when a painful corn develops on the top of the toe, on toe tip, and in between the toes. There may be a bursa (a small fluid-filled sac made of white fibrous tissue and lined with synovial membrane) under the corn or instead of a corn, depending on the pressure. Most of the symptoms are due to pressure from footwear on the toe.

Hammer toes can be due to several factors that are known to increase the risk of development such as:
- Tight footwear;
- Shoes that are narrow;
- Faulty Foot Mechanics; and
- Higher heels can force the foot down and squishes the toes against the shoe, increasing the pressure and the bend in the toe.

- If your toe is still flexible, it may be possible to use our splints or tape to try and correct the toe. Without correct fitting footwear, this is often unsuccessful; and

- The correct amount of space in the toe box will allow room for the toes to function without excessive pressure. Shoes should be one-half inch longer than your longest toe. (Note: For many people, the second toe is longer than the big toe.) Avoid wearing tight, narrow, high-heeled shoes.
