Cracked heels are commonly caused by dry skin (xerosis) and made more complicated if the skin around the rim of the heel is thickened as a callus. For most people this is unsightly but as the fissure cracks deepen, they become painful to stand on and the skin can bleed—in severe cases cracked heels can become infected.
As shown in the photo, the heel skin is abnormally dry and may have a thick callus which appears as yellow or dark brown to greenish discoloring, especially along the inside border of the heel.
What causes a Cracked Heels?
Some people tend to have naturally dry skin that increases their heels being prone to cracks. The thickened dry callused skin around the heel that is more likely to crack is often due to mechanical factors that increase pressures in the heel area such as an exaggerated pattern of walking.
Other factors that may be involved in the cause of cracked heels include:
Excess weight increases the pressure on the normal fat pad under the heel, causing it to expand sideways—if the skin is not supple and flexible, the pressures increases causing the heels to crack;
Open backed shoes force the fat under the heel to expand sideways through the opening and increases the pressure which their susceptibility to cracks;
Some medical conditions predispose heel skin to drying (eg autonomic neuropathy in diabetes can lead to sweat decreases or an underactive thyroid lowers the body's metabolic rate which reduces sweat gland activity and leads to foot dryness); and
Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema may be contributing factors.
