A stoma is man-made surgical opening that is cut into the side of the abdomen to waste from the body to be expelled into a collection bag most often called a colostomy bag. Urostomy care, colostomy care or ileostomy care requires patients who call themselves " Ostomates " to wear a colostomy bag or pouch that attaches to the side of their abdomen over the stoma to collect the waste products.

The use of colostomy bags or pouches can unfortunately produce unpleasant and embarrassing odors. The latter is often comprised of ammonia, mercaptans, amines, and skatole that are generated from urine and feces. Covering up strong ostomy bag odors with masking agents like perfumes pollute the air with chemicals and often times result in even more offensive smells. Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are very complex in what they do. Many receive millions of gallons of wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, restaurants, launder-mats, and others every day.

Spoiled and disposed wastewater really stinks! It stinks even more when the accumulated waste begins to decompose at a local community WWTP. This bacterial decomposition or breakdown of waste gives off foul odors. Foul odors are caused when bacteria ingest sulfur, rather than their preferred oxygen, producing a sulfur driven byproduct of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) that is strong enough to permeate an entire community. In some cases these H2S odor levels can reach concentrations strong enough to cause injury or death.

Sulfur based hydrogen sulfide—the cause of odors—can occur in many common areas such as funky food odors from garlic or onion in kitchens, smoke in draperies or carpets, pet odors, and even skunk scents.
